Today’s Diary: Sunday 2020-05-24

Posted on 25 May, 202027 May, 2020 by BloggerDogger

Today is Sunday. Saturday just came and went.

I haven’t done much on the site this weekend, but I haven’t been idle. I thought I would do some weekend stuff, so I went to Tesco and Wickes, though not on the same day – that would have been far too exciting. Tesco was ok, and I got a jar of pickled onions; Wickes, I had to queue for 40 minutes to get in, and came out with two bags of cement and a bag of potting compost.

The reason I am talking about my shopping experiences is not the shopping experiences themselves although, given the current state of the planet, I think any shopping experience of any kind would be something of a novelty. But … I am not talking about the pickled onions, I am talking about are the bags of cement … and how I spent my Sunday morning.

So … at home, I already had several bags of sharp sand. I had bought them towards the end of last year and they were stored in one of the sheds in the garden. I did have a plan to use them before winter, but as the nights drew in, and the days got colder, the completion of the plan became less appealing. Priorities change, and plans change as a result. It’s not an issue as long as there is a reason and as long as you don’t lose sight of your goal.

My Sunday Morning

Now it’s next year and it’s May, the days are warmer and the evenings are lighter, and I was able to pick up where I left off. Around midday, today, I set to work and I turned the sharp sand, or at least three bags of the sharp sand, along with most of one of the bags of cement, some water, a shovel and some hard work on my part, into several buckets of what looked like some sort of sand and cement-based slush puppy.

There were some outside walls that I wanted to render.

My Sunday Morning Rendering

I have to say at this point that am not a builder, or a plumber, or anything like that, but I’m not helpless … at least I don’t think I am.

I can do stuff, and just to show, this is what it looked like when I had finished.

You can see the bit on the right, the painted bit is where I had to stop towards the end of last year.

On the left, you can see how far I got today, but there’s still more to do.

Next time … another three or four bags of sand, some more cement, a shovel and some elbow grease. It’s too much like hard work to do too much hard work – I stop for a rest after three bags.

There’s room for some more rendering and some painting, but you’ve probably noticed that already.

I have the paint in a barrel and it’s ready to go … something to look forward to.

I will show you again when it’s done.

You can do anything … just about.

Why am I showing you this?

I have most of the last thirty years developing computer systems. If you want to know what sort of systems, check out the About pages. Whilst I enjoyed these day jobs, they didn’t prevent me having a go at bricklaying, plastering and loads of other things. Mostly, when I have had a go, I have been successful.

Don’t think that because you haven’t done something before, you are not going to be able to do it now. We all have to start somewhere, maybe your first efforts will be a bit grim but you will get better. Practice makes perfect. The reality is that if you don’t try, you can guarantee that you won’t get better.

If you want to have a go at blogging, you really should have a go at blogging. Start here at the 7-point blogging plan and just go with it. We don’t know what we can do until we have a go.

Anyway, that’s Sunday. Tomorrow, I am going to be looking at the Google Search Engine. It’s one of those things that everyone assumes everyone knows about. But … we’re beginners and we don’t! We don’t need all the low-level technical detail, but we do need to know what it does.
