Yesterday, I published the second post about managing unwritten links. The first post was about the unwritten link challenge and showed how it could be managed using post-it notes. The second post was about using the ideas in the first post and applying them to the iThoughts group of mind-mapping software tools. It’s not really what they were designed for but the data structure seems to work and it does the job for me.
I have said it before and I am going to say it again … there are far too many things to think about. Every time I go and have a look, I wonder how the experts can cram everything for the blogging beginner into a 7-point starter plan.
I have white-boarded my own 7-point plan, but so far it’s about 143 points light. I am hoping that I might be able to do a better job because I have been building business and IT systems from scratch for the last 30 years.
When I see a 7-point plan, it makes me smile, even my own.
Click on the whiteboard, or click here if you prefer, and I will show you how many points there really are in the 7-point plan, but it’s not quite ready yet … it’s going to take some time but it will be worth it.
Bear with me but I am writing a blog about writing a blog. I am starting here to research and then report on every question I am asking myself … because I am sure that you are probably going to be asking the same questions.
If I can answer your questions, I can save you time time and you might like me …
Timeslip
I’ve added a Timeslip (remember the 1970s children’s drama series – probably not!) function to the Diary to allow readers to move forwards or backward by one Diary entry.
The diary is going to be a key element of the site as it will track my thoughts as I am learning more and more about the technicalities and nuances of blogging and maintaining a blog. It’s not just about writing posts, there is form and there is function, all this needs to be considered.
Follow me on the journey.

… and I have been thinking about some other stuff too.
Backing up the Site
I have now written around 55,000 words and I should be thinking more about backing up daily. That’s a lot of work to re-do if it disapears.
At the moment, I am using Updraft Plus, but I didn’t really put a great deal of thought into it. I read a couple of articles and it seemed to have some good reviews, but can I trust it?
I shall be doing some deeper research over the next few days.
I saw somewhere an option for backing up a WordPress site without using a plug-in, I will definitely be looking into that one.
Thinking about Snippet Optimisation
Something else that has caught my attention is Snippet Optimisation.
I think I get the principles and I like the idea of occupying position number zero in the search engine results. Something else for the next few days. Watch this space.
Thinking about Canonical URLs
I wrote about Canonical URLs a while back, and every time I look at the beginner.beginner.beginner.beginner.beginner.beginner.beginner.beginner.blooger.me site structure, I can see where a little bit of canonicalisation might be beneficial. For example, under Resources there is a snapshot of the blog at three-weeks old, which is made up of similar content to pages that aren’t in the three-week-old section. The three-week-old examples should be pointing to the three-week-old section header page as the whole point of all of those pages is the example and not the contents.
No doubt there are other pages where canonical optimisation might be beneficial. I’ll write about what I do.
I wonder if I need to keep track of the canonical links?
